“When we started the FireWise project in Mpharane, not all members of the community understood the extent of FireWise.”
Mpharane is a community with lots of wattle. Wattle is used as fire wood, wind breaks and fencing, and people do not necessarily want to cut it down.
“But because South Africa is a water scarce country and wattle is sucking up the water, we have to remove it, and this causes a lot of misunderstanding.”
“People need to understand why we do what we do. There is a lot of skills development and capacity building to be learned from the FireWise programme.” - Seloane Gugushe (Chair Person)
The most vulnerable communities are now employed in the FireWise programme. It assists in skills development and capacity building.
